As I’ve written here, good brush hygiene is essential to your skin health. Dirty brushes and sponges harbor bacteria, leading to breakouts! No good!
But, you also want to be careful what you use to clean your brushes with. Harsh soaps and cleansers can eat away at the glue and damage your bristles. So, you need something gentle and specially made for brushes. However, buying brush cleaner can be costly, especially if you clean your brushes frequently.
So, a few months ago I took to making my own brush cleaner! And I was surprised at how effective and inexpensive it is to make. And because I’m so proud of it, I want to share it here with you!
3 tablespoons of unrefined coconut oil (if solid, warm until liquefied)
1/3 cup tear free baby shampoo
1 1/2 cup water
6 to 8 oz spray bottle
Using a metal whisk, slowly mix coconut oil and baby shampoo until a smooth, milky white mixture is attained.
In small, slow portions pour water into shampoo/oil mixture, whisking as you pour.
After mixing, a soapy foam may have firmed on the surface. This foam will settle in a few minutes, so don’t worry about it.
Carefully pour brush cleaner into bottle.
Screw spray top back on and you’re ready to go! I usually give each brush a few good sprays then rub them against my homemade brush cleaning mat while I run some cold water. Takes a few minutes but it gets the job done! For more info about how and why to clean your brushes, check out this post! Why You Need To Be Cleaning Your Brushes!!
And that’s it! If you decide to try this out, please let me know your results! I’m excited to hear what you guys think about this!
